Hey, everyone and welcome to another post. You have probably landed on this post because you’re interested in WordPress. Using the WordPress platform means you are getting ready to launch a blog with the intent of constantly publishing articles. WordPress powers over 36% of the internet, and the reason why is because it awesome for blogging. Most websites on the internet are either made with two types, and they are either a WordPress platform which is constantly being updated or a static website which a person or small business pays a website builder (programmer) to come along and build their site.
When somebody gets their website built, it’s common sense that they don’t know how to work it or what it even is properly. This is the reason it can remain static, which means people just search for it from within the search engines. It’s does not get published with new information and blog posts because the owner doesn’t know how to blog.
The difference between a static site and a WordPress site is that WordPress is meant to be worked. It has evolved into a platform where you can build a full-blown website that ranks in the search engines, and it is very easy to use. However, building the website is another whole different story.
You can either learn how to make a blog on WordPress and receive training so that you can publish your blog posts to your site. Or you can build a blog on WordPress and just leave it for people to search for your domain name.
In this post, I’m going to show you how to build your WordPress website where everything you need to be seen on Google is covered. This post will be written out in a foolproof step by step guide where you can follow each step as needed, or go back and forth as intended.
This all started for me within the exact way same way that you are finding yourself landing on this page. You could be young, old, or just in between but one thing you’re starting is a new blog. You want to do something new in life, and that’s kind of like what happened to me, except I changed my whole career. Did you know that building an online career can be one of the most rewarding things in the world to start doing. In fact, building an online WordPress site can make your business stand out the most in the search engines, and this is all based on the way the search engines rank people. For example, Google likes when people update their blogs daily, and with WordPress there’s everything you need right in front of you. In other words, what I’m trying to say is WordPress offers a tonne of rewards and building a WordPress website is fun exciting.
After you create your blog, you will feel a sense of satisfaction and achievement. You know when you do something new in life and you have everything to show for it? Well this is that. You are about to build a WordPress website which is your online business that is public. People can read it and get to know your brand.
We are about to get started, but first let me tell you how I’m going to present this post to you in case you are wanting to start now, because there’s many different ways you can do this. In the first half of this post, I will give you the step by step guide, that teaches you everything you need to start. Then secondly, I will then show you how you can start where I train, and in turn if you follow through with the training platform that I use, you will also receive me as your personal coach and mentor in building your website and earning money online.
1. Choose hosting for your domain
This is the part that has really evolved over time. Many people still swear by using this web hosting to get yourself set up. Web hosting is the service that holds your website for you. Without this, you won’t be able to build your websites.
BlueHost is a cheap web host that is easy to use, especially for beginners. The reason why so many people choose this web host service is because they are well known on the internet, which makes them a large online business.
I don’t want to make it sound bad, but I have seen other entrepreneurs come into where I host my site and explain how they experienced problems with Bluehost. When deciding for yourself, just remember you get for what you pay. This is your online business, and because you are new to this, you won’t know the problems that can happen. Because of this, you may be tempted to go with them because they are cheap. But just think, imagine months or years of hard work only to have your business hacked and ruined. It’s not worth it. When choosing a hosting provider to make sure you know the owners, and very professional people are able to be contacted. You don’t want to be locked out of your own online business and not have someone you know works there to fix it.
2. Filter out the free blogging platforms (WordPress.com)
Blogging can be done in a few different ways but before we find out how, let’s look at the platforms that are free to blog on. As I show you a list of the free blogging platforms moving forward, I will list a few important points about each one so you can make the right decisions about what you want to do to based on the facts.
People also consider writing posts to social media as blogging, and I know that’s true. It’s just that it doesn’t provide you with much in terms of revenue. That being said, I don’t recommend using social media as your main blogging platform because all your doing is making those blogs more powerful.
There is a rule of thumb and because of that I wanted to remove the free platforms for blogging out-of-the-way first, and in turn, allow you to see clearly with what you want to do.
The general rule of thumb is to avoid starting a blog on a free platform because they don’t give you the freedom to run and scale an online business. Free blogging platforms limit all your control over your website, and with that being said, let’s find out below how this takes shape:
- Free platforms control the blog’s content.
- Your can’t place ads to your blog
- Your domain address will be really long and that’s bad for business
- They can shut you down at any time leaving you high and dry
There are two big differences with WordPress.org and WordPress.com. WordPress.com allows you to make a free domain with them. The issue is if you want to create a real online business using your own personal brand then this isn’t going to be possible here. The way it works with WordPress.com is you will choose a blog name, and then in the search bar it will appear as example.WordPress.com.
Using WordPress.org allows you to download it completely free and choose your own domain; once you have a web-hosting system in place. This is what I want to show you at the end of this post so stay tuned for that.
3. Choose your blogging platform
Choosing the right blogging platform is a must. Like I mentioned earlier, if you are serious about online blogging then you don’t want anything to go wrong with your websites. When you look at what’s involved with building a site, think about the content creation. Months, years of hard work, it could all vanish or become ruined, and trust me, it has happened to me before. If it’s not about the hosting, then it’s about the training. In fact, think about things like backing up your site. There are countless blogs out there blogging on this same title, except they did once mention backing up your site. Why?because it’s not in what they have to offer.
This all comes down to what I always talk about – the internet being so far ahead of itself. For example, affiliate marketing (blogging) so far ahead of itself. You need to be able to do many things when building a website, and because no other blogger has this information that they can give you, they leave it out.
The good news is, you have landed on a page that can give you all the top recommendations to get started right away after this post.
Let’s go through a list of blogging platforms where you can build a blog:
- WordPress.com (bad)
- WordPress.org (Good)
The of website hosts above are all very popular hosting providers on the internet. Some of them you can create subdomains, and others you can make your own domain. They all let you create your own domains if you want.
Now, I want to show these platforms and tell you what each one is good for.
WordPress.org (the best)
WordPress.org is a blogging platform that you can download, and it comes with it’s own management. This blogging platform actually powers over 36% of the online world, which is nearly half. I read that the other day in another post. If you want to use the WordPress.org you will need a web hosting system in place, and with that you can simply download the file.
For making your website look fabulous this blogging platform has thousands of free themes already inside just waiting for you to use. When I started my blog, I had a free theme called Sparkle and it was a very nice looking theme.
WordPress.org has a lot of functionality, and you probably already know that by now. If you have never heard about another tech extension called plugins that is what this website allows. With plugins, you can create very powerful WordPress websites ranking high in Google.
The WordPress.org website platform is going to suit the following types of bloggers:
- People who want a powerful website
- People who want to monetize their websites
- Small businesses looking to expand their online business
The WordPress.com is not like the .org version. If you want to have all the hosting done for you then you can choose the .com version. The only problem with that is that it is free and it’s a general rule of thumb that free blogging sites aren’t as good as paid because the hosting system owns everything basically.
If you think that this is better for you then check out the prices below:
WordPress.com offers three price plans:
- $0 – Targeted towards basic blogging needs
- $99 / year – Suited to professional bloggers
- $299 / year – Focused on advanced business solutions
To set everything up with your site will take around 20-30 minutes depending on how good you are. This version of WordPress also offers themes that you can use for building your websites. On the paid version, you have more things that you can work with in building your site.
Who is going to get the most out of this version of WordPress?
- People who don’t want to mess with style
- People who just want to have fun writing blogs
- Pro bloggers who are not worried about sub domains
Tumblr is used for people who want to make short and contentful pieces of content. If you are still wondering yes this is a social platform as well. You can use it to practice on how your blogging would look if you were to start a real one. This is what I meant earlier about being real blogging sites.
Here is what Tumblr is mostly used for today:
- famous quotes
- images / pictures and animated GIFs
- short movies
When you stay using its platform on a regular basis, in turn, you will confound a large following. The large following is where the money is and in this you can stride for the world. You know what everyone is like when it comes to blogging don’t you? The larger you’re following the more your liked? Well that’s what your aim is from within here.
The Ghost blogging platform is another direct match to that of WordPress.org in the sense that it is downloadable. To use this service all you need first is the web hosting service. Once that is in place, download and install the Ghost platform. The Ghost is considered as being something also that beginners will like in the sense that it’s easy to use.
There are pricing options for the Ghost blogging platform:
- Downloadable version is $0.00 (Hosting is not included with the Downloadable version)
- The hosted version named Pro ranges from $8 to $200 depending on the number of blogs run and the anticipated traffic volume. (Hosting is included with the Pro version)
Ghost also have a variety of different themes that which you can use to make your site look and feel great. If you want your own custom domain name then this is also available upon purchasing.
Ghost is suited to the following types of bloggers:
- People who want to try new technology and be on the edge of web development
- People who are interested in trying something new but easy to work with
Blogger is one of the bigger blogging platforms that are regarded as fast and fun to use. Blogger is one of the oldest web blogging platforms online and they are owned by Google themselves. It’s that easy to use if you have a Google account then you can sign in with that, if not you will have to make a new one.
Blogger has both paid and free versions. If you want the free version, it will be exactly the same as WordPress.com as in you don’t need to worry about setting it up. The only issue with the free-domain is that it comes with your blog name as an extension, so for example it will look like example.blogger.com.
Who would enjoy using this platform the most?
- People who want to blog for their hobbies
- People who want to build small and personal brands online
Medium is a widely used platform that you may be familiar with already. The way this platform works is by asking its audience if they want to share their posts to the platform. Anyone is allowed to share their opinions and topics and have them published to their home front page.
Medium will then distribute all of its content through a diverse algorithm. The blog at Medium is the community as well, and with this in scope, the members can upvote different blogs as they see fit.
Anybody who has a profile with this platform can directly submit posts to the main blog scroll. The good thing about this platform is that within your profile you can add another third party extension domain name. If you want to do that then you will need to make a separate purchase.
Who is Medium most suited to?
- Personal bloggers looking to sharpen skills
- People who do it as a hobby
- Employees who also have their work blog and wish to third party that extension
The Squarespace blogging platform is what many consider as being the best all in one solutions center for website building. It is a user-friendly online site builder that has everything you need all within the one place.
Squarespace offers the ability for bloggers who already have third party hosting to merge with them and still keep that hosting that they originally had. This can become very Handy for website builders who suddenly need to switch plans so they can build a website freestyle.
The prices offered at Squarespace are based subscription plans which start at $8 and go all the way up to $24 per month. That price has hosted and a custom domain name included.
The User Interface of Squarespace is defiantly intuitive and powerful. It sports an easy to use blog-drop block center, which is in other words is a website drag and drop process builder.
Who is most suited to this website builder?
- Programmers who know how to build sites with a free hand style
- People who don’t know code and want a realistic user design
Drupal is another great website blogging platform as it is also downloadable. If you have your own hosting organized, this platform is going to be just like WordPress.org. Once you have uploaded this file, you then need to set it up which doesn’t take long.
Although some people think this platform is ok to use, others believe that this is not the case. On there it is recommended that experienced users take shape at this location only. Even that’s the case, it still won’t hurt trying it out as a newbie.
Who will benefit the most from this location?
- Skilled web developers
- Established business owners who don’t want to use WordPress.org
Weebly is another great blogging platform and hosting location. This platform-sports drag and drop editors that allow you to build and custom a website however you wish. This hosting service also has a whole bunch of different themes that you may want to take further by customizing them yourself with the easy to use drag and drop editors.
To use Weebly, you get to trial the hosting before purchasing. When the trial ends, you will need to cough up anywhere from $8 – 50 per month.
Who is Weebly going to be best for?
- Hobby bloggers
- Businesses owners who want to maintain their blog
TypePad is another blogging platform where you create a profile and just start blogging. If you are not happy with that then you can also buy web hosting as it also incorporates that as well.
TypePad is designed with a beginner’s typeface, which means if you are new to blogging it will give you a better chance to practice.
The only issue with this type of blogging agent is that like WordPress.com you are not in control of your websites. The web host managers can just delete your work whenever they please. If you want your own blog, you need to buy it.
Because of this platform style it makes it harder especially for HTML experts who want to custom design their work.
Who is TypePad best for?
- People just starting out blogging
- People who just want to practice blogging
Magento is a blogging CMS (Content Management System) but preferred more for ecommerce websites. The way this platform has been built is to allow people who want to build ecommerce websites a perfect chance at doing that.
Although the platform is not hard to learn, this website is more for professional web developers. Launching a blog does take time and effort. If you are not somebody who knows how to build websites, I would consider something a little more mainstream.
Who is this web hosting be suited?
- Ecommerce prospects who want to build
- Experienced website builders
I think just about everyone has heard of Wix before. Over the years Wix has expanded into what it is today as some seeing it as an awesome place to build a website.
Wix uses a drag and drop website builder to make or create your websites. This in turn is again meant for professional bloggers. I have tried using drag and drop and it does not work for people who have never done it before.
With this platform you can either start your website with a subdomain or spend some money and buy your own domain name. Prices are $0 – 18 per month.
Who is Wix Best suited for?
- Business owners who want to build a site
- Beginners who have never done site building before
Joomla is just like WordPress.org. It is an open-source CMS, which means you can use it for yourself. This means you don’t have anyone controlling you or deleting your content.
Joomla is very big on the inside and in saying that it has a longer time that you will need to learn it. Joomla is one of the most expensive hosting agents on the internet. You can try them for free for your first month but then after that they will set you back $20 – $100 per month.
If you are new or want to start blogging this will definitely be an expensive way to go. I would recommend something else for sure.
Who Joomla is suited for?
- Experienced bloggers and web developers
- People who don’t like WordPress
That’s it! With some of the platforms mentioned there comes a Content Management System (CMS). That means you can start blogging without needing anything more. But, if you want your own domain, then you will have to choose a blogging platform where you can upload the WordPress.org blogging file. This means buying your own domain name.
Now start blogging!
Build your website with WordPress & Wealthy Affiliate and be trained in full
Everything I have listed above is definitely enough to make some people happy. They are all really good website hosts and site builders. The only thing wrong with each of them is that they don’t sport any training, you have to learn everything on your own.
In saying that, I now want to show you where there is free training and website hosting. This is where I built the site that you are on, and it is the best.
